PROFINET is a real-time Ethernet protocol for industrial automation, and its RT real-time frames place specific requirements on forwarding delay and jitter. When file transfers, video streams or large volumes of TCP telegrams are present in the network, if the switch cannot identify frame priority, the forwarding window for RT real-time frames may be preempted, causing the I/O controller to detect a slave offline.
PROFINET Conformance class A (CC-A) certification requires the switch to implement the 802.1Q priority mechanism to ensure that RT real-time frames are forwarded with priority and are not preempted by other traffic.
Solidot SW4-GUP05D-PN and SW4-GUP08D-PN are models of the D-series unmanaged switches. Building on the D-series hardware foundation (broadcast storm suppression, DC9 ... 56 V wide voltage input, <= 7 µs switching delay, EMC protection), they add capabilities suitable for PROFINET Conformance class A networks.

What PN-specific designs are there?
Solidot PROFINET dedicated switches are designed for Conformance class A networks, with dedicated optimizations for real-time frames on top of standard Layer 2 forwarding:
● Priority forwarding of RT real-time frames: 802.1Q priority (IEEE 802.1p) ensures that PROFINET RT real-time frames are forwarded with priority and are not preempted by heavy TCP traffic.
● QoS Auto Priority: automatically identifies and prioritizes real-time frames.
● PTCP Filter: provides a PROFINET PTCP Filter for reliable PROFINET network communication.
● PROFINET RT protocol support: suitable for PROFINET Conformance class A networks, enabling real-time data exchange.
● Broadcast Storm Suppression: 2-position DIP switch; DIP switch 1 controls storm suppression, DIP switch 2 is reserved.
How to choose between 5-port and 8-port
The two models have identical hardware specifications; the differences lie in the number of ports and switching performance:
Parameter | ||
Ports | 5×RJ45 | 8×RJ45 |
MAC address table | 2K | 4K |
Buffer | 2 Mbit | 1.5 Mbit |
Backplane bandwidth | 14G | 16G |
Switching delay | <= 7 µs | <= 7 µs |
power consumption | < 5 W | < 5 W |
Nodes with few connected devices and no need for expansion can use the 5-port model; scenarios with a larger number of devices or requiring reserved ports can use the 8-port model.
